Shane Coursen

Shane Coursen has worked in the computer industry since 1986. As a field repair technician, he became well versed in the inner workings of Intel-based personal computers. In software quality assurance Coursen became familiar with processes required to create and release commercial software. Upon his entry to the world of software development, he actually entered the world of software devolution. Maybe an explanation is in order: instead of developing software, he learned to reverse engineer that that had already been developed. This, his current specialty, is what i commonly referred to as antivirus research.

Shane Coursen has been in the field of antivirus research since 1992. Coursen started as associate software engineer for Symantec/Peter Norton, which is where he got his roots in virus research. Moving on to become senior technology consultant for UK-based Dr Solomons Software, Coursen fulfilled his role as the company's media & analyst representative during their successful launch of operations in the US. Upon acquisition of Dr Solomon's Software by Network Associates (NAI / McAfee) in 1998, Coursen became one of NAI's senior technology consultants.

In 1999, Coursen went to work with Joe Wells as V.P. of startup Wells Antivirus Research Laboratories Warlabs, a wholly owned subsidiary of TREND/Micro.

Shane Coursen has been featured in Los Angeles Times and Fast Company. He has granted interviews for various TV and streaming media shows, such as CBS World News Tonight. He has been quoted numerous times in paper-based media. He has written articles for various publications including Virus Bulletin & Auerbach Publications. He has presented multiple times at NCSA, Virus Bulletin, EICAR and AVAR conferences.
